How to Ace Your CASA PPL Flight Test: Common Mistakes and How to Avoid Them
Your CASA PPL flight test brings the whole course together. The examiner wants to see that you can prepare a legal flight, manage the aircraft, maintain an accurate navigation picture and make safe decisions when the plan changes.
That breadth catches some candidates by surprise. A neat steep turn does little to rescue weak fuel planning. Excellent theory knowledge loses value if your lookout disappears while you explain it. The strongest preparation joins each part of the flight into one safe, organised operation.
This guide explains the mistakes that create trouble and gives you a practical way to prevent them. Use it with your instructor's advice, your aircraft flight manual and current CASA material.

What the CASA PPL flight test actually assesses
The PPL aeroplane flight test includes a ground assessment and an airborne assessment. CASA's checklist covers privileges, flight preparation, loading, performance, fuel, systems and operational knowledge before the flying starts. The airborne work then brings together normal operations, navigation, general handling, abnormal situations and non-technical skills.
The CASA Flight Examiner Handbook describes a scenario-based ground assessment that commonly takes about 45 to 60 minutes. The route should normally arrive about 24 hours before the test, giving you time to prepare the flight plan, fuel plan, notification, weight and balance, and performance calculations. You still need to validate every input against the current weather, NOTAM, charts and aircraft information on the day.
The examiner is assessing the complete operation. Accuracy counts, and so do judgement, workload management, situational awareness and threat and error management. A candidate who notices a developing deviation and corrects it early demonstrates a useful command skill. A candidate who allows the same deviation to continue may turn a manageable error into an unsatisfactory item.
Mistake 1: Preparing manoeuvres instead of preparing the flight
Students often spend the final week polishing stalls, steep turns and forced landings. Those exercises deserve attention, yet the test starts long before the wheels leave the ground. Missing records, unresolved knowledge deficiencies or rushed performance figures can expose a readiness gap immediately.
Build a test folder several days ahead. Include your identification, licence and medical evidence, logbook, training records, KDR evidence, aircraft documents and any school forms your examiner expects. Ask your instructor to check the folder while there is still time to fix an omission.
When the route arrives, prepare it as if you will fly without prompting. Calculate loading and performance from the correct aircraft data. Check fuel availability, runway suitability, airspace, weather, NOTAM and alternates. Mark the decisions you may need to revisit before departure.
Your oral preparation should also connect facts to the scenario. If the examiner asks about a passenger, fuel reserve or landing area, explain the decision you would make for that flight. A memorised rule is only the starting point. The examiner needs to see that you can apply it.
Mistake 2: Chasing the aircraft around the tolerances
Airspeed, altitude and heading can drift while you brief, tune a radio or look for traffic. The common response is a large correction followed by another correction in the opposite direction. Workload rises and the aircraft never settles.
Use the same control sequence you practise in training. Set a stable attitude and power combination, trim away the pressure, then return to a disciplined outside-and-inside scan. Small trends are easier to correct than developed deviations.
The examiner handbook allows for the reality that a pilot may touch a tolerance. The important questions are whether you detected the trend, kept the aircraft safe and corrected it promptly. Repeated or sustained deviations tell a different story.
Say what you have noticed when it helps the examiner understand your response. A brief statement such as, “Altitude is increasing, correcting now,” shows awareness while you act. Keep the explanation short enough to preserve lookout and control.

Mistake 3: Losing the navigation picture
Navigation becomes fragile when the flight log turns into a piece of paperwork that you completed before departure and ignored after take-off. The examiner expects an active picture of position, track, time, fuel and nearby airspace.
Update the log at useful points. Compare the actual time with the estimate. Confirm the wind effect from the drift you can see, then make a measured track correction. Use prominent features and supporting navigation systems to verify position without letting one source replace the rest of your scan.
If you become uncertain, start a structured recovery early. Maintain safe control, identify the last reliable position and use the available information to rebuild the picture. A good lost procedure is calm and visible. Quietly flying deeper into uncertainty creates airspace, terrain and fuel risks.
Diversions reward the same discipline. Choose a suitable destination, establish a safe heading, make a workable time and fuel estimate, then refine the plan as capacity allows. The examiner is looking for a safe operational decision, supported by sensible calculations.
Mistake 4: Treating weather and fuel as fixed numbers
A weather briefing and fuel plan are snapshots. Conditions, routing and consumption can change after you have printed the paperwork.
Before departure, compare the latest information with the assumptions in your plan. Ask what would make the flight unwise, where you could land and how much fuel each option would consume. During the flight, update fuel status from elapsed time and actual progress.
Avoid defending a plan simply because you prepared it carefully. A safe pilot changes course when the evidence changes. If cloud lowers, visibility deteriorates or the wind creates an uncomfortable runway problem, make the decision while you still have several good options.
Your personal thresholds should come from your training, aircraft limitations and instructor guidance. The flight test is a poor time to experiment with a smaller margin than you have used during the course.

Mistake 5: Becoming casual with checklists, radio and airspace
Familiarity can make a home aerodrome feel easy. The test still requires consistent checks, accurate radio work and active awareness of where you may fly.
Use the checklist at the proper phase and complete every mandatory item. A flow can help you move around the cockpit efficiently, followed by the written checklist to confirm completion. If an interruption occurs, return to a known point instead of guessing where you stopped.
Prepare radio calls before pressing the transmit switch. Listen first, build a concise call and then return your attention outside. If you miss an instruction or transmission, ask for clarification. Guessing creates a greater problem than a short request to repeat it.
Track airspace boundaries with the same care you give terrain and weather. Know the clearance or communication requirement before you reach the boundary. CASA treats airspace and ATC non-compliance as safety-critical, so late awareness can have immediate consequences.
Mistake 6: Rushing abnormal and emergency actions
An emergency exercise can trigger a burst of memory items, radio calls and cockpit movement. Aircraft control becomes vulnerable at the exact moment it needs your full attention.
Stabilise the aircraft first. Establish the required attitude or best glide condition, choose the immediate safe option and then work through the applicable procedure. Use the checklist when time and the aircraft situation permit.
Keep assessing the result of each action. A forced-landing exercise still requires a wind-aware area choice, a realistic pattern and continuing attention to terrain. An engine problem after take-off requires firm control and a prompt selection from the safe area ahead. The exercise assesses judgement as well as recall.
If the examiner introduces a malfunction, respond to the scenario you were given. Inventing extra failures can lead you away from the task and consume attention that belongs outside the aircraft.
Mistake 7: Hiding an error instead of recovering from it
Many candidates believe that drawing attention to an error guarantees a fail. That belief encourages silence, delayed action and rushed corrections.
The examiner already sees the aircraft state. Early acknowledgement shows that your monitoring process is working. Correct the safest and most important element first, then confirm that the correction achieved the intended result.
Use a simple recovery loop: detect the trend, state the problem when useful, keep control stable, correct the cause and recheck. The loop works for altitude drift, a navigation discrepancy, an incomplete checklist and a changing weather decision.
The chance to recover has limits. Poor aircraft preparation, airspace infringement, operations outside aircraft limits or an unsafe response to weather and terrain may be safety-critical. The goal is early recognition, before a small problem reaches that point.
A practical plan for the final week
Divide the final week into clear preparation blocks. Each block should reduce uncertainty while preserving enough rest for sound decisions on the day.
Seven to four days before
Ask your instructor for a frank readiness review. Identify the weakest test areas and schedule focused flying if required. Check your documents, KDR evidence and training records. Read the flight-test checklist from beginning to end and connect every item to a recent lesson.
Rehearse the ground scenarios aloud. Explain how you would assess fuel, loading, performance, weather, airspace and passenger requirements for a real flight. Short, applied explanations are more useful than long definitions.
Three to two days before
Complete a representative navigation plan and have your instructor challenge it. Practise updating the log, rebuilding position and making a diversion with realistic workload. Review the aircraft systems and emergency checklist for the exact aircraft you expect to use.
Protect your sleep and avoid an exhausting final study session. Fatigue reduces scan quality and makes simple calculations harder.
The day before
Confirm the meeting time, location, aircraft and examiner instructions. Prepare the supplied route, then place the source documents and calculations in a clean order. Charge approved equipment and pack the items you normally use in flight.
Stop studying at a sensible time. The aim is to arrive able to think and adapt.
Flight-test day: keep the operation familiar
Arrive early enough to update weather and NOTAM, inspect the aircraft, check its documents and recalculate anything affected by current conditions. Avoid changing your cockpit organisation or adopting a new technique because another student recommends it that morning.
During the test, manage workload before it becomes urgent. Complete checks at familiar trigger points. Brief likely threats before each phase. If you need a moment to organise the aircraft and your thinking, say so and create that capacity while maintaining safe flight.
Treat the examiner as a passenger whose instructions form part of the scenario. Ask for clarification if a request is unclear. Continue making the decisions that the pilot in command would need to make.
If the result is a partial pass
A partial pass can preserve credit for satisfactory items. CASA examiner guidance generally allows those credits for one retest within 28 days. Read the flight-test report carefully and confirm the exact retest scope and timing with your examiner and instructor.
Use the report to build a focused remedial plan. Recreate the conditions that produced the weak item, practise the correct process and demonstrate consistent recovery before booking the retest. The objective is command performance you can repeat reliably.
